Wine Racks – Methods to Storing Your Wine

Temperature: Wine should generally be kept at room temperature, or 55 degrees. Here’s where it gets tricky — sparkling wine should be kept in a wine refrigerator, while white wines are best kept in temperatures of 45 degrees. Temperature controlled wine refrigerators allow you to set the temperature based on the wines you most frequently store, but a simple wine rack placed in a cooler spot of your home will do just fine. Just make sure that the spot you decide to store your wine isn’t next to a heater or vent, as fluctuations in temperature can impact the taste of the wines.

Height: When using a wine rack, keep this rule of thumb in mind — sparkling wines on the bottom shelf, white wines in the middle, and reds on the top. This rule comes into play with the thought that heat rises, so keep the wines that are best served cooler towards the bottom.

Surroundings: Did you know that keeping a wine next to fruit or vegetables can cause the wine to mold? Foods that can rot may send the moldy flavors into a cork of the wine, causing the wine to have unfavorable smells and tastes.

Dark spaces: When exposed to light, wine can age faster and lose it’s flavor. Keep your wine racks away from any sources of natural light, and in a darker section of your home.

Store wine sideways: By keeping wine on it’s side, the wine will stay in contact with the cork, preventing air from escaping into the wine bottle. Different types of wine racks will allow you to tilt the wine to an optimal level, allowing the wine cork to stay wet, preventing oxygen from coming in.

Air Circulation: Wine can mold. If you keep wine hidden in a closet or dark room, make sure that there is a steady amount of circulation. Just like you wouldn’t keep clothes in a moldy closet, make sure your that the place you store your wine is clean and free of mold.

How Eggs are Classed and Graded

The grading of eggs is done with a series of tests where the eggs are examined for various qualities such as size and weight. There are three grades of eggs, which are Grade A, Grade B, and Grade C, in Canada. The grades in the US differ slightly by name only, as Grade A, Grade AA and Grade B. Grade A eggs are sold to consumers but the other Grades are for commercial uses.

In order to grade the eggs, they are first washed to make sure they are spotless then they are sent to be candled. Candling, which is usually performed by hand, examines the contents of the egg. This is done by passing the eggs past a light which allows the shell to be viewed internally. The conditions of the shell, the white, and the yolk, are checked for cracks and air pockets. In modern egg operations, the eggs are checked for cracks with the use of sonic sound. Tiny probes tap the egg a total of 16 times to accurately detect any blemishes in the shell. If a crack is found, a thud will indicate the egg is below standard and will be removed. An egg that is perfect will have the machine produce a high pitched sound. The candling or scanning allows the technician to see the size of the air pocket, cracks in the shell, and the centering of the yolk. This is what will later divide the eggs into different grades.

Once it has been determined the egg is worthy of carrying on, it then goes to be graded and weighed. The weight is done by the carton, not the individual egg, and computer controlled sensors weigh each egg over 60 times in less than one second. There is only a 3 ounce difference per one dozen eggs of a different size so the accuracy of the weight of each carton is important.

Grade A: The egg is found in perfect condition. The shell is not cracked at all, is fully clean, and the yolk is round and centered in a firm white with a minimal air pocket. These eggs will be processed for shipping to retail stores for consumers to buy.

Grade B: This egg also has an un-cracked shell but may have a rough texture. The white will be watery/thin and the yolk somewhat flat. These eggs are saved for commercial uses such as selling to bakeries or for processing into other foods like making mayonnaise or noodles.

Grade C: Eggs with this grade likely have a cracked shell, loose yolk, and very thin white. This will only be sold to commercial processors as use as an additive for other products.

Sometimes during the cleaning and other processes, eggs will get broken or punctured. These will be added to the Grade C eggs to be used in processed foods. The eggs are all broken by special machines at a “breaking station,” where they are then pasteurized. The eggs are pasteurized by heating the eggs liquid form to a very high temperature in order to kill any harmful bacteria and micro-organisms. Once the pasteurization process has been completed, further processing of the egg is done and then packaged in liquid, frozen or dried/powdered form for sale. Preservatives or flavorings, and food coloring may be added before selling to companies who will use the processed eggs for production of food or condiments as well as such things as shampoos, pet food, and in adhesives.

Technology has played a significant role in the production of eggs. Now, all eggs are able to be used in a variety of food areas, while the best eggs are provided directly to the consumer.

The First and Still The Best Coffee In The World

Ethiopia is one of the oldest countries in the world situated on the horn of Africa. Ethiopia is famous for many things but it is also the birthplace of coffee and from these humble beginnings coffee has travelled the world and very well may be the most popular beverage in the world today.

Coffee has its origins way back in the in the ninth century. It is though that a herd of goats ate some bright red berries that they found growing on small green bushes, it was then evident that the goats to have enjoyed the strong taste.

This all took place in a region of Ethiopia called Kaffa and this is where the word coffee gets its name .From these first Arabica plants, coffee spread throughout the world, but Ethiopian coffee still remains one the best in the world today. The Coffee brewed from these beans are wonderfully aromatic and very low in acidity.

Ethiopia produces a large variety of coffee beans that could suit every palette without any unique, defining characteristics. The taste and flavour varies according to the region in which it is grown. Thus, one would find dry-roasted coffee or a wet-roasted blend or even a combination of both as found in Sidamo, a coffee known for its rich but light and smooth taste.

It is down to personal tastes, if you prefer a light tasting coffee you will choose a dry roasted coffee. Because of the many different ways Ethiopians use to process their coffee they have a wide variety of tastes and flavours in their coffee, Spices to fruity tones are all common in Ethiopian coffee.

The most outstanding coffee comes from the region of Kebado. This is simply the best of all the Ethiopian coffee. Kebado its self is small rural village situated in Sidamo, high up in the side of Metesio Mountains.

This coffee has all the traits of the perfect brew. It is full of flavour and aromas it is smooth to drink with wild and fruity undertones. When you drink an organically produced Kebedo coffee for the first time you will know that there is nothing better.

The beans are organically produced; they are vacuum packed to ensure the upmost freshness. This ensures the coffee will keep its unique characteristics even they have been shipped all over the world.

Like all other coffee beans from Ethiopia, Kebado coffee beans must also be kept away from dark roasts to prevent its flavour from getting affected by the stronger dark roasts. While its taste may be appealing and pleasant as a dark roast with a plummy flavour, it does, nonetheless lose its fruity, fragrant and mild character. Kebado coffee is famous as a light roast, and that is the way it has earned the distinction of being one of the best coffees ever produced. This is one variety of coffee that every coffee drinker must try.

Wine & Food

Pairing wine and food is what we’ll be looking at in this part of our wine 101 guide…

The taste of a wine can improve or worsen depending on the food that you drink it with. There are only a few combinations which really do not work, however, by learning a little you can bring the best out of both the wine and the food.

There are two basic and simple approaches involved; one is contrast, where the wine is different in character to the food, yet still complimentary, and the other is complimentary, where the wine and food work together through a similar trait (such as sweetness or acidic). Either style of pairing will work well; choosing one way over the other is just depends on the type of food being served and your personal preference.

Regional combinations are worth paying attention to as food originating from a particular region or country will often pair well with the local wines, as they have both evolved to complement one another. The foods that are hardest to combine with wines are egg dishes, acidic foods, and hot and spicy selections. There are no specific rules or recommendations for these, and it’s really a case of hit and miss. Personal experimentation is necessary if you insist on pairing wine with such foods.

Here are some examples of wine and food pairings: pair light seafood with light wines, like Sauvignon Blanc or White Port; beef requires heavier red wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon or Burgundy; poultry is usually served with whites unless it has a heavy sauce, in which case lighter reds are perfect; for lamb, try medium-bodied reds like Bordeaux.

However, though these are said to be classic pairings, that doesn’t mean that you’ll necessarily like all of them. Keep in mind that your palate is unique to you, so if you don’t like a combination, don’t use it. It’s worth remembering also that many people have their preferred style of wine and stick to that style regardless of the occasion or the food on offer. Therefore, you should always have different varieties on hand when entertaining other people. You can recommend a certain variety, but the final decision about what they drink should be up to your guests.

Wine Serving Temperatures Made Easy

The temperature at which a wine is served is all-important, so you should take the time to at least learn the basics. It’s commonly said that whites should be served chilled and red wines at room temperature, but you really need to know more than that.

Most domestic refrigerators keep their internal environment at about 4 degrees, and that is too cold for the majority of white wines. Champagne and dry white wines of a high quality are best served at a temperature of about 8 degrees and 11 degress , which is near to the temperature of a regular underground cellar. White wines should ideally be served from a cellar but, placing them in the fridge for about an hour will also do just fine. Cheaper sparkling wines, sweet white wines and inexpensive white wines are best a little colder, perhaps 4 degrees to 9 degrees, so two hours or so should reduce the wine down to a reasonable temperature.

Like white wines, red wines also need to be chilled. The centrally heated houses of today are too warm for red wines to be served at ‘room temperature’. The ideal serving temperature for most fine red wines is maybe 14 degrees to 17 degrees, somewhat cooler than modern houses, though this was a normal temperature a century ago. Therefore, many reds, unless stored somewhere cool, will benefit from thirty minutes or so in the fridge.

When correcting the temperature of wine, you need to take care not to damage it. Placing it in a fridge is best, with another option being to place it in a bucket of ice and water. Doing so will bring the wine down to 0 degrees, this is far too cold to appreciate the wine, so you’ll need to remove the bottle before it gets that cold.

The risk of damaging wine is more significant when trying too warm a bottle that is too cool. Warm the wine gently, preferably by planning ahead and bringing the wine from its cool storage area, be it wine cellar or fridge, some hours in advance. Many are tempted to try and speed up the process by placing the wine near radiators or other sources of heat; doing so will damage the wine.

If uncertain about the serving temperature, it’s best to err on the side of caution and serve the wine a little too cold. A wine served in this way will soon warm up in the glass, maybe even releasing nice aromas as it does so.

Organic Garden Pest Control: 5 Tips to Keep Your Garden Bug Free

Organic gardens are not without some of the drawbacks that every garden has. One of these drawbacks are various kinds of pests.

In a conventional garden you fight these pests in a different way than in your organic garden. In an ordinary or non organic garden strong chemicals are regularly used to fight the pests. These chemicals harm every living thing, including plants, good bugs (yes there are plenty!), your soil and you and your family, as well as accumulating and trickling down into the ground water.

Organic Garden Pest Control 1: Manual removal This is by far the easiest and cheapest way, but not applicable to all kinds of pests. Go out into your garden in the early morning and in the evening, and pick by hand all the bugs you can see eating away on your precious plants, like for example aphids and lily beetles. Squash them or put them in a container with soapy water.

Step 2: Organic Garden Pest Control with solutions to spray A simple way to fight bugs is to suffocate them with soapy water. Just mix 1 dl of natural soap with 1 liter of water, then pour into a spray bottle and spray away at your plants. Make sure you cover the whole plant with the mixture, and repeat now and then to get rid of the bugs that subsequently hatch.

This works well with aphids, and sometimes with spider mites, but not always.

If you want to try a more efficient and stronger solution to spray on your plants, here is one: Mix well 2-3 garlic cloves, some large chili peppers and 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in your blender. Strain, then add the fluid plus 1 tablespoon natural soap to 1 liter of water and make sure you mix the ingredients well together. This should be sprayed on your plants in the morning or in the afternoon/evening, and preferably when cloudy, to avoid damage on the leaves.

Mice and moles may also be scared off when you spray this strong remedy near their holes. But there is a backside to using both soapy water and the strong garlic-chili solution: They will kill off the good bugs as well. To help in keeping them in your garden, there are other ways to fight bugs.

Tips 3 for Your Organic Garden Pest Control: Introducing the good bugs This is professionaly called biological pest control. There are several bugs that do the job, the ladybug for one is a really good worker eating aphids with a healthy appetite. Others that are also good at this are the lacewing and the praying mantis. They can be cajoled to move into your garden by growing plants that attract them, or bought in egg sacks or live from a company specialised in this area. Using biological pest control is totally environmentally friendly, as you use the good bugs to establish an ecological balance between them and the ones you that harm your crop.

Step 4: Organic Garden Pest Control by Growing Scary Plants That is, the only ones to get scared are the of course the bugs! Onions planted together with your carrots will deter the carrot root fly from eating away at your carrots. Plant lavender along your garden path and smell the fragrance when you pass by… Marigold are lovely when planted amongst your veggies in your vegetable garden, and can of course be a part of any flower bed, there are so many varieties to choose from.

Make sure your plants grow in healthy soil, rich in nutrients, in order to keep them vigorous and strong. By doing that your plants will be able to flourish even if they are attacked by one pest or another.

Step 5: Organic Garden Pest Control by Spreading Mineral Dust Not any old dust will do however, it has to be Diatomaceous earth, which will penetrate the hard exoskeleton of insects like ants, fleas or small beetles. This will cause them to dry out. Spread a thin layer of the mineral on the ground, and repeat after heavy rain or watering.

Hollyhock horror! That is what I think of the fungus causing the leaves of this lovely oldfashioned flower to turn reddish brown, and then fall off leaving the naked stem with only the flowers at the top. But there is an environmentally friendly way to save them:

Boil a kettle full of horsetail and water to cover for 10 minutes at the least. Strain, and then dilute the solution 5 to 10 times with water. Use this diluted fluid to spray your hollyhocks, and don’t forget to spray under the leaves.

The best of luck with keeping pests off and your plants healthy and beautiful!

The Methods Behind A Good Motorcycle Lift

The motorcycle lift is in many respects similar to that of its car lift counterpart. However I received a number of emails asking to go over the basics of these so never one to disappoint, I shall go right ahead.

Anyone working in the motorbike industry whether its repairs, sales or modifications will have used one of these useful tools. A motorcycle lift is a lift table that has been created with the sole use to raise motorcycles of the ground for inspection etc. The advantage these lifts bring to any mechanic or budding motorbike modder is that once the motorbike has been raised to a certain level, the person inspecting the bike will not have the usual neck or back straining commonly related to ground repairs, so from a human health standpoint they are great as they remove the danger of back injuries.

Motorcycle lifts are also allot smaller than car lifts, this makes them more accessible to the home user who may put one in his garage or shed. This again allows the person to do any repairs or small modification on the motorbike, removing the need to spend money at a mechanics. These lift tables are also very useful for oil changes and general maintenance such as cleaning the bike, without having to lie on the cold ground below.

9 time out of 10 the motorcycle lift is made from stainless steel and the lift is usually powered by hydraulic cylinders These cylinders are able to handle a weight of up to seven hundred kilograms or one thousand pounds of weight in most cases.

You can get a number of different variety of motorcycle lifts on the market these days. Most of which handle just a standard motorbike. Some lifts have the ability to make themselves long enough for the larger motorcycles such as a Harley Davidson or a Chopper.

Just like car lifts, the bike lift must be taken and used in a safe manner, the user must always respect the machinery and should always be taking a cautious approach when using them. You should always make sure that when you are raising your bike, have the motorcycle engine switched off and make double sure that you have secured the security locks on the lift so that the bike does not de-stabilize itself when getting raised off the ground, always make sure the bike is tightly fitted into its correct place.

If you feel as though you are in the market for a decent motorcycle lift whether it is for business or personal use, you should always develop a healthy habit of regularly keeping an eye on all the nuts and bolts to make sure that it is in top condition. This maintenance can make your lift stay functional for many years.

Again my advice with these is establish what your exact requirements for the lift may be and purchase the one that ticks all your boxes as opposed to spending on a cheap motorcycle lift that may not fit your needs as best as possible.

Lastly; as with car lifts, professional motorcycle lifts require more frequent maintenance than do their domestic counterparts so here again, it?s advantageous to have a qualified mechanic in charge of maintaining it. While the professional lifts do cost more, both to buy and maintain, they soon pay for themselves, particularly if you?re in the motorcycle repair business.
